Ohakune is the gateway to the Turoa ski fields and the spectaular bush walks in the Tongariro National Park. The ski resort is the second largest ski field in the North Island of New Zealand, making it a very popular destination for four months of the year.

Ohakune welcomes you to the town with the Big Carrot, which symbolizes the importance of market gardening to the local region's economy. This is all forgotten, however, when you arrive in the town in the ski season with the abundance of lodges and ski rental shops enticing winter sports enthusiasts who come every year. Ohakune Junction is where it is all happening in the evening – the bars and restaurants swing into action and the local tourism operators make their money for the year.

In the winter months it is advisable to book Ohakune accommodation well in advance. If you are unfortunate to have missed out on accommodation for the winter season, you can check the availibility of accommodation in the nearby village of Raetihi, which is only 11km east of Ohakune.

Although mostly only popular with the tourists in the winter months, when the snow has melted the trails reappear, making it possible to go tramping, mountain bike riding and horse riding.
