Oamaru and the Waitaki District

The Waitaki District stretches from the beaches of the Pacific Ocean in the east, to the ski fields of the Southern Alps in the west. You can drive eastward down the Waitaki Valley, past turquoise hydro lakes, to the distinctive Moeraki Boulders of the the southern coast. The historic coastal town of Oamaru, with its unique mix of Victorian and Edwardian buildings, has made the town a national treasure. It is also home to the world’s smallest penguins the little Blue Penguin, a colony of which is situated at the harbour foreshore, just five-minutes walk from the town centre. Just 8 km south of Oamaru is Totara Estate, the birthplace of New Zealand’s frozen meat industry, with its interactive displays, theatrette and unique memorabilia relating the history of the estate.

The Waitaki Valley offers an array of outdoor activities including salmon/trout fishing, boating, camping, skiing, hunting, hiking, golf and gliding, or simply relaxing and enjoying the ambience of the various villages. The Vanished World Centre in Duntroon, gateway to the iconic Elephant Rocks and Danseys Pass, showcases the district’s unique geological features. A short distance from Duntroon is the Takiroa Maori Rock Art.

Oamaru motel accommodation options include AAA Thames Court Motel, while the best Oamaru backpacker accommodation can be found at Empire Hotel Backpackers.
