Golden Bay, north-west South Island
Golden Bay, set in the north-west corner of the South Island, is a popular holiday destination with great beaches, tranquil rivers, and fertile farmlands and valleys, backed by a chain of rugged mountains which include the dramatic Kahurangi National Park. The remains of past Maori habitation are evident in the district and there are a variety of artists and craftspeople practicing their skills and selling their work. Other natural features include freshwater springs at Te Waikoropupu (Pupu) Springs and Farewell Spit.
