Anaura Bay, Bay of Plenty & East Cape, New Zealand
Anaura Bay was Captain Cook's second landing point whilst charting the New Zealand coast. The 225-hectare Anaura Bay Scenic Reserve, with its native vegetation and fine views of the bay, features large puriri trees and lots of birdlife. The bay has evidence of early Maori settlement, and Waipare homestead, dating from the late 1880s, remains as an example of early European architecture. One of the best places to stay is Rangimarie Anaura Bay Beachstay.
