The Condé Nast Traveller Reader’s Travel Awards 2008 (UK) showed New Zealand was the favourite country in the world amongst its readers.

This win makes 2008 the fifth year in a row that New Zealand has been ranked in the top five favourite countries by the publication’s readers.

Mr O’Connor said the win shows that the New Zealand tourism industry is delivering a high-quality experience to visitors.

“New Zealand tourism operators should be justifiably proud. These awards recognise how satisfied our visitors are with the experiences they have here.

“With Tourism New Zealand’s latest $7.3 million campaign due to launch in the United Kingdom on Sunday, this is timely recognition that New Zealand continues to exceed the expectations of visitors from our second largest market.

“Our ability to continue to compete with other countries will depend on delivering a better product than our competitors, ensuring we are environmentally, economically, socially and culturally sustainable,” said Mr O’Connor.

New Zealand, with a total satisfaction score of 95.11 percent, was also listed third overall in the ‘Top 100’ section of the awards which includes cities, airports, hotels, cruise lines and other sectors within the tourism industry.

Among other New Zealand companies to be recognised in the awards were Auckland Airport (sixth favourite airport worldwide), Air New Zealand (sixth favourite airline worldwide) and Huka Lodge (eighth favourite leisure hotel – Australasia and South Pacific).

New Zealand last won the favourite country category in 2005, when it was also ranked first in the ‘Top 100’. India was voted second favourite country, followed by Italy, Thailand and Brazil. Australia ranked 11th, down from 4th in 2007.

There is a lot to do and see here and it is contrasting to the small towns that you will encounter in the other parts of the country (no sheep here). Beaches, islands and mountains (mostly extinct volcanoes) give this large city character. Backpackers can go sea kayaking or sailing in the Auckland harbour, catch a ferry to one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf, climb to the top of a hill to admire a sunset and the view or relax at one of the many beaches or parks. Hey backpackers, have you ever climbed a volcano? Rangitoto is just a short ferry trip from downtown Auckland. After you walk to the summit, and view the lava caves you can relax in the salt-water pool at the bottom before returning to the city.

Accommodation

There are more places to stay than you can poke a stick at in Auckland. Auckland accommodation ranges from five star luxury hotels to really cool Auckland backpackers hostels right smack in the heart of the city.

Activities

The Waitakere ranges in West Auckland has a variety of walking tracks and day hikes so you can get a feel for the New Zealand bush without leaving the city. Perhaps you want to see the view above Auckland as you go skydiving, or relax with a beer after a tour through a local brewery. It’s all available in Auckland City.

Destinations

Waiheke Island is another popular backpacking destination. This large island is also easily accessible, and a perfect place to experience an island paradise, with picturesque beaches, quaint little townships, jazz festivals, and wine vineyards.

Employment

There are plenty of part time and seasonal jobs in the hospitality industry around the Viaduct Basin in Auckland Harbour for backpackers. Backpackers can also get a job on a boat. There is fruit picking in the region as well. Outside of Auckland there are orchards and farms where you can also work.

Entertainment

Like most large cities, Auckland has art galleries, a zoo, an underwater aquarium, a large array of shops, market places such as Victoria Park Market and nightclubs.

The Bay of islands is located just north of Auckland in the Northland of New Zealand, and is about a 3-hour drive from Auckland city.

Paihia is a popular tourist attraction in the Bay of Islands for a very good reason. There are plenty of things to do in Paihia, including hitting the great golf courses, deep sea fishing, beach and forest walks, water sports such as scuba diving, jet skiing, and kayaking, adventure scenic flight tours, as well as checking out the bars and restaurants along the strip, or even just getting a sun tan at the beach.

A beach fronts most of the length of the town. It is one of the smaller beaches in the Bay of islands but there is always plenty of room to get some beach to yourself. Topless bathing us allowed, and since many of the tourists are Europeans who have travelled around other parts of the world before coming to New Zealand, it is no big deal.

Paihia accommodation is available for all tastes and budgets ranging from backpackers and bed & breakfasts to hotels and motels. The Base Pipi Patch hostel is about 50 metres from the beach and only a short stroll to the shops and Paihia wharf. The famous Pipi Patch bar gives you a chance to mingle with some of the locals for a laugh and to discover the best Paihia attractions.

Paihia really is the perfect destination if you’re looking for a weekend getaway. Not long after arriving in the town, make a point of boarding The Rock which is an overnight cruise boat where you go cruising and exploring the many islands in the Bay of islands. You get many stop offs whilst on the cruise, allowing you to explore remote islands, some of which are uninhabited. Whilst on the cruise you can also go kayaking, fishing and usually see dolphins swimming in the ocean. They are known to come up very close to the cruise ship.

Kayaking up the Waitangi River to Haruru Falls is also a popular activity. You can take a half day walk through the mangroves from near the Waitangi grounds and golf course to the falls. There is abundant wildlife along the bush walk, especially Tui birds and native New Zealand pigeons.
